the wolf is one! i can not believe it. i look at my big boy at get beyond confused.
how could i possibly have a one year old?! it makes no sense and all the sense in the world all at once.

we had family and friends fly to our spanish abode for the celebration. our house was full of noise, chaos, dog hair and complete blissful happiness. well at least on my part. ha.

when the wolf was cuddling me before his nap we looked at each other and high fived. he gave me a big cheesy smile and i convinced myself it was acknowledgement.

"we did it mom." "a whole year!"

most likely it was just excitement from recently learning how to high five.

our family and friends pulled together and helped make the lovely party i had in my head actually happen in real life.

the color scheme and overall decoration was based on what i was recently informed was Charlie Harper artwork.

peek a boo forest is luccawolf's favourite thing in the world. next to sticks. 3rd to dirt. so we decided to include all of those things. my husband made the mountain scene fake polaroid photo booth and the letters art installation.

we used brown craft paper, neon yellow printer paper, and white and gold wrapping paper. (mind you i live in the farming countryside of southern spain, not a michael's to be found. i work with what i can find. ;)....) i would like to also thank the spanish country side for copious amounts of dirt and sticks and most importantly, it's break in the rain for a perfect 70 degree day with not a cloud in sight.

i've recently been miserable at the gym. my normal alone time haven has been infested with a...........dare i say it....... goal weight ("gasp!") and a goal date (double horror "gasp!") i've been killing myself to see some semblance of pre baby bod. now mind you im not doing this for myself. oh no. not for my own ego/ self esteem/ health/ mostly ego. i have a baby. more importantly, i have a baby who is teething. i'm to tired to care if i'm a little rounder than past me (which i am.... also i'm using the word "little" loosely... which my skin also is). but the one who shall not be named (aka my husband) told the school here that i would be more than happy to be their cinderella ball cinderella this year ( last year i had an excuse. i was knocked up, and they didn't want the kids to get confused. and by confused i mean think cinderella was an uber slut. ) this saturday i've got to squeeze into to a dress... a small dress.... stupid. insert other more poignant swear words here _________..... balls. so stupid. <------forgive all my french sentences.

on the drive home from misery's house (the gym) my favorite spanish radio station, "radio tres!" was playing this ironic song that immediately lifted my spirits. not because of the message, because i'm definitely not getting paid, but because i looooove seasick steve. so i thought the internet should get to listen to this song too and the 2 people that read this blog (me & bryan when i make him). so enjoy future me when you read this post. also, sorry bryan for making you read this again.

worst blogger of all time goes to me. i think i check this every month though. so progress! anyways i forgot to blog about halloween fun times. 1st year with a baby did not disappoint. and baby pulled through and some how managed to love his costume (taking his props very seriously) and didn't try to take it off all night. i sewed the strong man costume and cape, i can neither confirm nor deny he is wearing girls leggings and the mr. made the back drop out of poster board.

since little man is not at candy eating age yet we mostly just brought him to trick or treat so we could stare at him and giggle so hard at his achieved cuteness. oh man, babies dressed up might be the top 3 best things in the whole world. after baby kisses and newborn baby smell. i gave out a giant squeal when i saw a 13 month old toddling around as a cuddly skunk. i probably need to get out more.

he thought it was hilarious.

his first tattoo. the real faux tattoos didn't come in on time. so this lame magic marker version had to do.

i'm a strong man.

so somehow my husband convinced me to get a bunny. i'm not sure how. i amass it to his brilliant convincing skills. or possibly that he's been begging for a goat for so long that i just finally caved because a bunny seems so much easier than a friggin goat. if anyone is keeping track i now have 1 husband, 1 baby, 2 dogs, a bunny and thank the Lord, no friggin goats.

okay, i'm not furious. the bunny is cute. like so so cute. everytime he does sniffy bunny things or stands on his hind legs wiggiling his tiny t-rex arms i squeal. and watching luccawolf's reaction to said bunny is hilarious (a great deal of happy 'give me the bunny so i can put it in my mouth' screaming and turning veinny red to the point that i think he might explode). but we decided to get the softest bunny possible and at the time that meant an english angora. now my bunny related spanish is not excellent, however, i'm pretty sure the guy selling the bunny said "this rabbit is calm, cute and soft but it will be huge, though it's poops will be small. like rooster size, the rabbit, not the poops." thank you bunny salesman for being our light in this poor decision darkness.

"i guess, but mostly hungry cats and the owls that live in the forest, but him possibly being a her and making a ton of bunny babies would suck too."

"yah, and they could give him syphilis."

"what?!"

"all the wild bunnies here have syphilis and they give it to cats and i guess pet bunnies too."

"predatory syphilis?! why didn't anyone tell me?!"

"about syphilis?"

"bunny predatory syphilis!"

so i'm on the instagram. i'm a bit obsessed. but it is causing me to not upload our adventures with the wolf on this here blog.

we have been traveling a great deal this summer. germany. istan. marbella. puerto banus. rhonda. the beach. all the beaches.... etc. etc. so much fun. so much tired.

traveling with a baby has made me feel more accomplished than any job i have ever had. 4 bags of luggage<--- usually just his stuff.... melt downs. fevers in foreign countries. 7 hour lay overs after an international flight. and the all important poop explosion during siesta at a bull ring where there is absolutely no baby clothes other than a too small velour french mime outfit for 50 euros, would (pre baby) sound like the greatest horror story ever told. but a strange thing happens once you have a kid and you can survive anything.

i have never in my life been more creative or maguyver like in surviving these scenarios. it's a weird trait that no one let me in on about getting mommed and i am none the less excited about.

yesterday l. wolf turned 8 months. i was carting him around on some mini trip to puerto sherry with b and uncle adam and he was just sweetly and calmly entertaining himself looking at his all time favorite book (little word book) and a wave of gratefulness swelled over me. he is just the best baby. we have been on 13 planes together. 13 individual plane rides! now.... just typing that out causes anxiety. babies on planes are way worse than snakes on a plane in normal circumstances. but my little guy is so used to traveling around meeting new people and seeing new things that it's almost become his norm.

unfortunately i believe our house is super boring to him because it doesn't take off or land and there are no stewardesses to fawn all over him or inflight magazines to rip up.

now. i do not love flying with a baby. i am not insane... it's on my list of things i don't love the most for sure, however, i want to write a little love letter to the internets about my traveling buddy. we've been through so much together these past 8 months, at home, abroad, ancient bull rings, etc. etc.... and my momming has been under serious test by God to choose now, while we live in a foreign country with a beautiful language that i am terrible at to entrust me with a human life. though memories like first smile, first foods, first laugh and first poop explosion go along with exotic scenery and locales that we have been fortunate enough to visit with our pride and joy.

lucca wolf i am so grateful for you. and i can not wait to show you more of this gorgeous world full of gorgeous people and cultures that you can make swoon with your giant smile.

the man i married is as interesting and great a catch as anyone could dream of. when i met him he only wore goodwill tshirts and camo cut offs with paint on them. now that you can buy those things at urban outfitters he had to switch it up a bit. i find europe has brought his style to a whole new level. its really campy mixed with how a dad looked in the 80's and linen to survive the spanish summer. i was on my nerd boyfriend and i think i found what his latest inspiration has been. thanks to a size to small blog for the nerd boyfriend heads up.

if teething had a face i would punch it.

my sleeping baby was giving me and pops 10 hours a night. 10 hours i tell you! it was miraculous. we were functioning like regular human beings all day and the kitchen was even be cleaned. i don't like to brag but i was actually caught up on all my laundry. (that means i can stop looking for old t shirts to cut up and wrap his sweet little wolf but in g diapers.)

and then.......

f-ing teething. we got through the first tooth pretty quick. but this damn second tooth might be the death of me. waking up every 2 hours last night. boo.. hiss..

and i feel like it shouldnt be called teething. teething was the slobbery chomp fest we've been experiencing the past 2 months. this is jagged bone cuts through flesh time ( ill think of something snazzier). but i believe that is the only way to describe what poor wolfie is going through.

as i sleepwalk through today this is definitely my soundtrack.

i have a 6 month old! nuts! no seriously i can not believe we have been graced with the wolf babie's presence for half a year. this guy is seriously the greatest thing bryan and i have ever done.

the sleepless nights, washing poop off of cloth diapers, feeling like a 24 hour diner to this sweet giant baby is all worth it to get just one smile from lucca wolf. in that moment i know i am the luckiest lady in the world and i would do anything to keep him happy. i will also bear maul anything or anyone that try to make him sad...... yay hormones.

yesterday we celebrated luccas 6 months on earth with a half birthday extravaganza. the husband and i ate 6" subs and lucca got half of an avocado. his favorite.

we went to the park and let the big boy swing on said big boy swing.

he loved it. all the excitement just made him fall asleep.

after the park we had some birthday cocktails. bryan got the weirdest craving for pina coladas after smelling sun tan lotion at the beach... his mustache is causing him to do absurd things. so lucca wolf got a water bottle (because there is no greater joy in this boy's life than drinking from a water bottle) and we got what the owner of ultimo bar called a pina colada.... i'm pretty sure she just put baileys and kaluha over ice. it was really gross. i blame it on bryan's mustache.

side note: we live in spain and it is normal to bring your baby to sit in a cafe and get drinks. though i always think of 'sweet home alabama' when we do. "you have a baby? in a bar?!"

after our pina colada fail we headed home for some half birthday cake.

i found an awesome recipe online at wholesome baby food for an applesauce spice cake and lucca wolf loved it. i had to put it in his munchkin food strainer and he went to town.

we loved it too. my dear friend marina who is mommy as well as a cage fighter...true story... is moving back to the americas. she and lucca wolf's good friend emory stopped by to say bye and help us out with the cake.

here is the recipe:

1/2 cup molasses

1 cup applesauce

1 tsp cinnamon

1/2 tsp cloves

1 tsp baking powder

1/2 tsp baking soda

1-3/4 cup flour

1 tsp ginger

Mix the molasses and applesauce in a large bowl. Add remaining ingredients and mix well. Bake in a nonstick 8 x 8-inch baking pan or one sprayed with a non-stick spray, in a 350° F for 30 to 45 minutes, or until it tests done.

**The batter may be a bit dry and you may need to add more applesauce or a bit of water. Try adding 1/4 cup of applesauce first then gradually add a bit of water by tablespoon**

though we were fortunate enough to get a trip to the mediterranean in for this past memorial day weekend i am in need of some more get-a-way. you would think my thirst would be quenched with a last minute surprise trip to the spanish riviera, however, instead of a filling my travel needs it just opened the flood gates of my get-a-way desire. there are so many beautiful places to see in southern spain. i adore this country and its people and can not get enough. safe to say i am an addict. the whole reason we said yes to my husbands job in europe was to travel and unfortunately i have been sufficiently travel spoiled. SPOILED I TELL YOU!!!..

do you ever go to museums or art festivals and think 'i could paint that.' ? in all truth i usually would not actually be able to ever paint that. but that does not stop my greatest snobby inner voice convincing myself otherwise. side note: my snobby inner voice always has a nasaly british accent.

how much fun are these guys having?! taking themselves so serious. my favorite 'artist' (paint pourer) is the one at the end who seems so nervous about the last pour that she grasps her chest to catch her breath. i hope to take my 'art' that serious one day.

as brought to my attention by a dear friend of mine, in the process of getting mommed this past december see here.

i completely forgot about this little blog needing to be cared for as well. anytime i go to write something about this crazyness that is being in charge of a HUMAN LIFE (<---nuts) my sweet wolf baby decides attention can not be swayed away from his chunky cheeks. when he smiles at me some biological force causes my being to stop everything im doing to give him kisses all over. seriously, nothing gets done around here.

so i hope to be able to commit to be back in the blogosphere as long as i can shield my eyes from his charms.

i still like non mom things a lot. though my news feed filled solely with pictures of my baby would probably cause you to think other wise. my friends are saints for putting up with bryan and i and our lucca wolf obsession. its not my fault it's now in my genetic make up. it's science. so it's been proven by very smart and impressive people.

the artistic revolution has long began in the city ruins of the once great detroit. we used to live in windsor, canada across the border and were not allowed to have the windows down when we drove through the city. this was a while ago and the city has definitely turned around. they are at a very exciting time of construction and restoration. historically when the bohemians move in and take over high real estate rates are just around the corner. but for now we can just enjoy the creative stylings of the current owners of this city, who are doing all they can to get people back in detroit.

for some reason it seems like Christmas is taking forever to get here this year. it might have something to do with my anticipation for a certain Christmas baby to get here. the product of a not so virgin birth but other than that a great deal of similarity.

i can't wait to decorate. so i've been looking up some alternatives to outdoor Christmas lights. is this too much?

as one of the more obsessed lykki li fans i am the first to admit that some of her last albums songs were naughtier than some of the more graphic gangsta rap i have been witness to in my life. evidently she is branching out into naughty videos as well. hahaha. crap. i'm already such a mom. anyways, this video is beautiful and would be even more so if there was less crotch grabbing and proclamations of pride over prostitution. but even the prude i've suddenly turned into can't deny my love for this catchy track and such beautiful artistic direction.

"a palm cave entrance?! wood plates?! eating with our fingers?! pin the tail on the wolfie?!... this could not rule any harder!"

i had the great pleasure of being surprised by all of these elements at a "where the wild things are" baby shower thrown in my honor by my dear friends here in spain. sometimes being so far from home while starting our new family is one of the most difficult things i've ever had to deal with. this however, was not one of those times. i have never felt more at home, in this temporary home, than on this day.

the shower was based on my husband's and my love for the spike jonze adaptation of "where the wild things are" as well as our dear baby's nursery that is somehow slowly filling up with so many adorable friendly monster things.

the talented lisa kimberly who has been taking my maternity shots through out my pregnancy blogged about the experience as well as took these fabulous pictures below. now i have the photographic evidence of how adorable this shower was. many kudos must go to the dear sandra sweet (she needs to start a blog) for finding all these fun elements including the urban outfitters tree backdrop.

it was truly a memorable experience.

since lil' lucca wolf is really busy from the hours of 4 am to 10:30 am (i think he got a job or he's adding an addition to his home... my womb), i have taken to a new game every morning. I watch through pitchfork's great selection of gangsta music choices and i see which ones lil' lucca wolf dances to. not just kicks or hiccups along to but actual the movie alien full stomach movement too.

i find solace in so far he is showing great taste in music.

this weekend my husband topped himself. he sees it as a personal challenge to make each date night more exciting than the last. yes, i will always be grateful for this internal battle against himself.

now, we live in beautiful andalucia, spain. for some reason in beautiful southern spain our favorite bands don't come out to visit as often. when somebody we know is playing in our vicinity we are instantly excited, let alone somebody we love! such an occasion arose this weekend at the monkey week music fest. most of the bands we had never heard of. and then there was bird. the magnificent, whistling, one man band playing 10 minutes from our house..

wait. that's not it.
not only were we going to hear his brilliant violin playing we were going to get to hear it in a 400 year old spanish monastery that was once converted into a jail and now sits in wait for such brilliant purposes as the echoing melodies of sir andrew bird. after some snafu with tickets, some kind hearted belgians helping a poor swollen pregnant women get into the concert of her dreams and a hour and a half of standing in line we made it into the monastery. they ushered the few of us familiar with the bird in southern spain into the open air courtyard off of the cathedral part of the building. underneath the spanish night sky in the shadows of the gloomy stone carved barred jail cell windows bryan, wolfie and i swayed to the beautiful sounds of his timeless voice. wolfie danced the whole time. he loved it. i loved it. bryan loved it. the belgians let me know i was cool for going to a concert late at night whilst being "soooo pregnant." and that made me think how i must now build a musical foundation of not suck for our lil baby boy. yes even in utero my choices of music intake will be just as conscious as my choices for food intake.

i maintain i hold true to this in quite a strict fashion.
example:
creed came on the loud speaker in the store i was in and i immediately walked out.
wolfie was blissfully unaware of the severity of the situation. in my mind it was on the same level as saving him from a burning bus teetering on the side of a cliff whose valley was filled with a lake of burning fire.
you are welcome sweet child.
you are welcome.

bryan and i are in agreement when it comes to music we shall expose wolfie too. why really annoying lullabies and screechy karaoke kids songs? there is no developmental stage we will be skipping by not allowing him to listen to really crappy music, right? or is that one of the steps as important as tummy time?

none the less our bases are covered.
lullatone makes lullabies bearable and somehow actually enjoyable. they also have the most adorable art projects. ie. make your own mobiles. love.

they also have the greatest alphabet ipad app.

my man and i are going out of our way to spend as much time alone as possible. understanding that the littlest is coming faster than either of us can really comprehend, date nights have become as necessary as breathing oxygen.

bryan jokes that he doesn't ever have to try hard to be romantic do to the fact that we live in europe. a simple ice cream run turns into a stroll on cobblestone streets past castles and cathedrals on the ocean to find one of 100's of gelato shops run by the friendly locals.... sounds like bragging. but it really is the only way to get to the gelato my pregnant body so desperately needs.

this evening stroll somehow turned into watching a marching band pass by playing the theme song from fraggle rock followed by 20 spanish teenagers dressed in wedding dresses escorted by their fathers to a beauty contest. the reason for the parade like most things is still lost in translation to us. but who cares. that really just happened.

and on the seventh day. they rested.
as we sit here enjoying a sweet sweet lazy sunday full of npr, cinnamon rolls and puppy cuddle fests we are so excited to be done with sweet wolfie's room.
crib.... check
diapers... check
chalkboard wall.... check
monster dolls.... check
baby...................

ok. ok.. so we gave in to the new parent overly prepared thing. yah we have 2 1/2 months to go still but for some reason my nesting phase struck early. or........ having a reason to repaint what was once a hideous office the color of blue painters tape lit a fire under my butt.

this was soooo much fun to do. the husband and i love being creative together and imagining what lil' lucca wolfgang would look like playing in his room gave us more joy than we ever anticipated.

now on to the waiting for him to get here. december you can't arrive soon enough.

though the child in my belly has made it very clear that it prefers ice cream to spinach i have decided to try out this parenting stuff while it's still easy (aka while the baby has to do whatever i do).

i made a run at my first green smoothie suggested by the lovely curator of Honest Fare and it was absolutely delicious. i even forgot the parsley and it didn't matter. now to focus and really try to exercise this swollen pregnant body.

oh wait. what's that baby? you don't want to? okay. fine. you did eat all your spinach.

in the land of the rising sun where it is mexico hot during this month i find that i do enjoy being pregnant in a foreign country. mainly do to the fact that when not using your first language you have little to no tact. i must not only sound offensive but also unknowingly be offensive to so many wonderful spanish people here. gems come out in interaction often.
"you are big like a home, you must be pregnant with double babies."
or "your hips are huge! it's a boy. i know"

and then sometimes you get really random tidbits of information.
"your baby come very soon. your lips are so swollen. that is what happens, big lips than baby come."
(said to my friend who is pregnant and has normal size lips.)

today was a delight though. i got a compliment. and if i lived in the 50's i would have breathed this compliment in like oxygen to a drowning person.
"joo are a fancy pregnant."

"excuse me? a fancy pregnant? i'm not sure what you mean."

"joo know. when womens get pregnant they dress like.... pllllppphh...... like no good anymore. and they wear the pants only. joo know... the sweat pants"
